Antique Homes
This old building was originally built as a "carriage house", (garage) - but now it's referred to as the "guest house"
The old sill beam was pretty tired ...
So we installed a new Pressure treated Southern Yellow Pine Sill, insulated the wall, reused the original (200+ year old, hand hewn) sheathing boards, replaced the old window, installed new corner boards and Eastern White Cedar siding.
Some new stairs were needed here ...
So after replacing the old stringers, we installed Red Oak Risers, Mahogany Treads, Newell Post and Handrail.
One of my favorite challenges around the antique homes is turning one of those rotten old Bulkheads into ...
Something new and functional :-)
This old barn in Norwell needed more than just a roof. (it had been leaking for years) In addition to the degraded roof trim, some of the timbers and floor joists had been damaged by the intruding weather ...
The superiority of Red over White Cedar is seen here - This building was raised in the late 1800's, and still had the ORIGINAL Red Cedar siding!
On the North side of the building (where the sun never shines) we only replaced a few (and a window) - the rest were OK!
We had to replace some floor joists and boards, and repair some beams above.
The south end needed a complete re-do. We purchaced the 2 3rd story windows needed, and I manufactured the other 4.
It was a great way to spend the summer of '02 -
Took this pic in April '07
This house needed a new deck, framing and all, and we made 3 new posts and balustrades
The "winter" door below I made from some antique Douglas Eir boards I'd recovered somewhere along the way. The screen door I made from the 5/4" clear Cypress that was available for a short time a few years ago.
The old stone foundations are very porous, and ground water and roof runoff tend to flow, so some copper was placed and helps keep things dry below.
We insulated, Sheetrocked, trimed windows, put new 14" wide Pine boards in the floor, and installed the cabinets here. (I used the computer to "stitch " together two photos to make this panorama)
So as you can see we:
Stripped the old shingles, re-built the entry door trim, repaired the sill beams, jacked the floors, installed new cornerboards, mudsill(water table), roof trim and gutter, new clapboards and shutters.
The backside got some renodeling too ...
